This is the Adobe Illustrator illustration of Metop, Eumetsat's polar satellite, imported into Adobe Photoshop and placed against an artificially coloured background of one of Eumetsat's classic satellite images in order to illustrate Metop's appearance in situ. |
This
is the world's most accurate, artificially coloured photograph of Earth.
Separate, tinted layers were created using Adobe Photoshop - an ocean layer
(blue) at the top, a vegetation layer (green) beneath, a desert layer (beige)
and the original black & white layer at the bottom for shading and
accentuating the polar caps.
.. The blue ocean layer was erased over the land masses to reveal the green vegetation layer (this alone took about a week as I had no template for Earth corresponding to the position of the satellite) and this was subsequently erased over the beige layer to reveal the deserts, etc. . The result of this method is an extremely realistic image of Earth that, though coloured artificially, retains all the integrity of the original black & white satellite photograph and provides a cloud free template for producing new images in the future. The production of this image revolutionised Eumetsat's satellite imaging facility. . The finished product is 39 cm wide and weighs 62 MB (this vastly reduced example is itself a rather cumbersome download so be warned). |
